Leeds College of Building (LCB) is the only General Further Education College (GFEC) in the UK dedicated to the construction industry. The College is based over two locations in Leeds: North Street Campus and South Bank Campus, with our project covering the older of the two campuses.
The works spanned levels A/B, C/D, and E, with existing spaces being reconfigured and repurposed, and associated mechanical and engineering changes and new finishes rolled out throughout.
Our first challenge was the production of a tender, based on a series of intent and concept drawings. Working alongside the client’s architect, Fuse, and M&E specialists, our team rapidly developed the design, allowing Lodestone Projects to provide a thorough tender breakdown to the College. This also meant the College could understand what works were included within submission.
As with all College and University projects, the next challenge was delivering the project during the summer period when the College was closed to students. Working closely with the College, we were able to obtain an area of the site before other areas were made available following the students’ departure. This allowed our team to commence the works in a phased manner.
Working closely with Fuse, our Project Manager Josh Turner led the project on design management and coordination, from inception through to completion. As Josh was involved with the project from the initial design stage, continuity of personnel was provided to the College from Lodestone, during what would be our first project with the team.
Josh held weekly site meetings to provide updates on progress. To avoid delays, the team ensured that any necessary design details were provided in a timely manner.
Our site team was led by Mike King, who, alongside Josh, was able to deliver the project in nine weeks, snag-free. This meant the College could occupy the space and carry out their own works (furniture/IT installation) prior to students’ arrival.
Further works to the College will be taking place during Easter 2025; we will be replacing the corridor floor covering – and, again, working when the College is closed to the students.
