Project
description

Fletchers Waste Site in Sheffield had a requirement to install a 3200m2 steel frame waste transfer centre to store waste prior to segregation. Lodestone was tasked with developing the existing Stage 3 Design and taking the project through to construction. At the point of Lodestone’s engagement, the area within the site was scrubland used for storing old plant and machinery. After an initial cut and fill exercise Lodestone installed over 450 driven piles to support the load bearing slab. The building had a combination of hot and cold rolled steel as part of the frame. The roof is cladding along with the top half of the side elevations where it meets concrete panels. The building also benefits from roller shutter and pedestrian doors. The steel frame has been intumescent painted internally and externally.

In addition to constructing the building, Lodestone also installed new below ground drainage and an attenuation tank, rainwater harvesting, electrical services consisting of a new distribution board, lighting, fire alarm, heat detection and new paths around the perimeter with ramps into the building.

Project
challenges

The biggest challenge initially was establishing the levels required to build from; the site levels differed drastically from one side to the other over a 4000m2 area. The site remained live operationally throughout the scheme and the volume of import and export was huge resulting in around 80 wagon loads of materials being removed from site per day and then the same again imported during the pile mat installation.

In addition to the above during our mobilisation period we discovered a gas main running through the centre of the site. This had to be removed prior to any cut and fill works were carried out resulting in a delay to works starting. Thankfully we managed to minimise the delays and catch the time up further down the programme.

Project
outcome

The project is still ongoing and is on track to complete on time August 2026.

The Result
What our client says

Josh Turner especially deserves some recognition for driving this forward and keeping everything moving in the right direction alongside the wider team effort behind him, thanks for putting up with it as I know it’s not been the easiest on this one.
